MINISTER QUOTES from "The Great News Network"

As you read these quotes please pray and seek the Lord
to see how they will touch and convict your heart and cause you to repent and go forth with the gospel of Jesus Christ...

Many do not recognize the fact as they ought, that Satan has got men fast asleep in sin and that it is his great device to keep them so. He does not care what we do if he can do that. We may sing songs about the sweet by and by, preach sermons and say prayers until doomsday, and he will never concern himself about us, if we don't wake anybody up. But if we awake the sleeping sinner he will gnash on us with his teeth. This is our work -to wake people up."

--Catherine Booth-

Repentance does not bring a sense of sin, but a sense of unutterable unworthiness. When I repent, I realize that I am utterly helpless; I know all through me that I am not worthy even to linger to bear His shoes. Have I repented like that? Or is there a lingering suggestion of standing up for myself? The reason God cannot come into my life is because I am not through into repentance."

-Oswald Chambers-

"We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in the slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased." -C.S. Lewis

Even if I were utterly selfish, and had no care for anything but my own happiness, I would choose if I might under God to be a soul winner, for never did I know perfect overflowing, unalterable happiness of the purest and most enabling order till I first heard of one who had sought and found the Savior through my means. ~Charles Spurgeon

We as Christians too often substitute prayer for playing the game. Prayer is good; but when used as a substitute for obedience, it is nothing but a blatant hypocrisy, a despicable Pharisaism... To your knees, man! And to your Bible! Decide at once! Don't hedge! Time flies! Cease your insults to God. Quit consulting flesh and blood. Stop your lame, lying, and cowardly excuses. Enlist! ~C.T. Studd

Have you no concern for the unsaved? Then you are not saved yourself, be sure of that. -Charles Spurgeon

If sinners be darned, at least let them leap to hell over our bodies. And if they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees, imploring them to stay. If hell must be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let no one go there unwarned and unprayed for." -Charles Spurgeon

Oh, my friends, we are loaded down with countless church activities, while the real work of the Church, that of evangelizing and winning the lost, is almost entirely neglected. -Oswald J. Smith

We have been gazing to the heavens while sinners are sinking into hell. -Ray Comfort

If the average church made as much noise about God on Monday as they did to God on Sunday, we would have revival. -Ray Comfort

You have nothing to do but to save souls. Therefore spend and be spent in this work. ~John Wesley

So long as there is a human being who does not know Jesus Christ; I am his debtor to serve him until he does. ~Oswald Chambers

If we worship God yet ignore His command to take the gospel to every creature, then our worship is in vain. We made draw near to Him with our lips, but our hearts are far from Him. -Ray Comfort

I will very gladly spend and be spent for your souls. -Paul

Woe is me if I do not preach the gospel! -Paul

Asked why he was used of the Lord so greatly in China, Hudson Taylor replied, "God had looked long for a man weak enough, and He found me." He takes the weak things of the world to confound the mighty. Spiritual wisdom does not come with years; neither does maturity. The key to both is obedience. Whatsoever He says unto YOU, do it. If you love me, keep my commandments.Jesus

"A church including 100 Christians who are 50 years old has collectively experienced 500,000 individual church attendance events in their lifetime (two worship events per week). A 400-member church of various age levels has attended one million individually counted total worship events. A church of 800--two million exposures to church services. The last thing we need is more information. What we need is more application. We need to engage our culture. We need to get in the game."
--Scott Brockie

The nature of Christ's salvation is woefully misrepresented by the present-day evangelist. He announces a Savior from hell rather than a Savior from sin. And that is why so many are fatally deceived, for there are multitudes who wish to escape the Lake of fire who have no desire to be delivered from their carnality and worldliness." - A. W. Pink

"Why does the Church stay indoors? They have a theology that has dwindled into a philosophy, in which there is no thrill of faith, no terror of doom and no concern for souls. Unbelief has put out the fires of passion, and worldliness garlands the altar of sacrifice with the tawdry glitter of unreality. The Holy Ghost cannot conquer the world with unbelief, nor can He save the world with a worldly Church. He calls for a crusade, a campaign, and an adventure of saving passion. For this enterprise He wants a separated, sanctified and sacrificial people." Samuel Chadwick

If your heart takes more pleasure in reading novels, or watching TV, or going to the movies, or talking to friends, rather than just sitting alone with God and embracing Him, sharing His cares and His burdens, weeping and rejoicing with Him, then how are you going to handle forever and ever in His presence...?" - Keith Green

"It is one thing to have sin alarmed only by convictions, and another to have it crucified by converting grace." - Joseph Alleine

"Do not judge the Bible by your experience but judge your experience by the Bible."
-Henry Blackaby-

"If the giving of the Law, while it was yet unbroken, was attended with such a display of awe-inspiring power, what will that day be when the Lord shall, with flaming fire, take vengeance on those who have willfully broken that Law?"
-Charles H. Spurgeon-

Worthless nobodies are just the kind of people God uses because that is all he has to work with.
-John MacArthur-

"If you are getting into the ministry because you think you can do it better, don't! If you think for one minute that God is calling you into ministry because you can surely do it better than someone else, then here is a new perspective for you to consider: God could soon be calling multitudes of people into ministry because they will be able to do it better than you! No, competition or comparison is not why God calls people into ministry. God calls people into ministry simply because that is where He wants them to be."
--Brian Hanson in Is This What I Signed Up For?

The superficial work of many of the professional evangelists of the last fifty years is largely responsible for the erroneous views now current upon the bondage of the natural man, encouraged by the laziness of those in the pew in their failure to prove all things 1 Thess. 5:21. The average evangelical pulpit conveys the impression that it lies wholly in the power of the sinner whether or not he shall be saved. It is said that God has done his part, now man must do his. Alas, what can a lifeless man do, and man by nature is dead in trespasses and sins Eph 2:1! If this were really believed, there would be more dependence upon the Holy Spirit to come in with his miracle working power, and less confidence in our attempts to win men for Christ.

A.W.Pink

Evangelism and theology for the most part go separate ways, and the result is great loss for both. When theology is not held on course by the demands of evangelistic communication, it grows abstract and speculative, wayward in method, theoretical in interest and irresponsible in stance. When evangelism is not fertilized, fed and controlled by theology, it becomes a stylized performance seeking its effect through manipulative skills rather than the power of vision and the force of truth. Both theology and evangelism are then, in one important sense, unreal, false to their own God-given nature; for all true theology has an evangelistic thrust, and all true evangelism is theology in action. - J.I. Packer

Why is it that too often want we the power and miracles of the first century church, but without the evangelistic responsibility, the rejection and persecution, and the radical message that comes with it and is in fact the key to that power?"

"The church is the only army in the world that seeks to invite its enemy into their barracks." -- Chris Wright

There is an Irish proverb that goes:

You can't plow a field by turning it over in your mind.

We have to stop thinking about witnessing (one of the churches we belonged to wrote up a big, long 75 year mission plan AND NEVER made a plan to go out to witness THAT WEEK or any other week) and go beyond praying about ministering the gospel, must GO INTO THE field of souls with the Word of God.

Thinking "outside the box" is not a new concept in this world.

What Christians need to do is "think inside the Word of God," which alone is "settled forever in heaven." (Ps. 119:89)

Actions speak louder than words.

We, who call ourselves followers of Christ, cannot be judged on our intentions - we must be judged by our actions. People will not judge how much you cared about their lost souls by your intentions or even your words. They will know how much you cared about them by your actions. People will not judge whether we, the visible church of Jesus Christ, believe babies in the womb are precious by our intentions. They will judge us by our actions, or lack of action.

Talk is cheap.

The whole purpose of evangelism is primarily to tell men what sin has done to them, to tell them why they are what they are, namely, separated from God. It is to tell them that what they need above everything else is not to be made to feel happy, but to be brought back into a right relationship with the God who is 'light and in him is no darkness at all'. But that means preaching holiness. To separate these two things, it seems to me, is to deny essential biblical teaching. --Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Exposition to Ephesians

Jim Elliff powerfully says, The sowing of bad seed has produced massive crop failure yet unprecedented statistics. It is getting harder to find wheat among the tares.

It is the complicity of the evangelical church in this deception, either through misinformed enthusiasm or love for repute, that is the most disturbing. We have poured over materials on methodology for bringing people in and used our theology books for doorstops. We have entertained more cleverly than ever before and made the outside world feel good again about the idea of church. We have been quiet enough about sin to make it worth their while to show up repeatedly and perhaps even to join. We have taught them how to act Christian without conviction, to praise God without loving holiness, and, as one has said, to say Amen without saying Oh me! Is it any wonder that when our converts leave the services, they take the pastors hand and say, It surely is fun to be in this place rather than Surely God is in this place?

"You cannot separate what a man believes from what he is.

For this reason doctrine is vitally important. Certain people say ignorantly, I do not believe in doctrine; I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ; I am saved, I am a Christian, and nothing else matters'. To speak in that way is to court disaster, and for this reason, the New Testament itself warns us against this very danger. We are to guard ourselves against being 'tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine', for if your doctrine goes astray your life will soon suffer as well.

So it behooves us to study the doctrines in order that we may safeguard ourselves against certain erroneous and heretical teachings that are as rife and as common in the world today as they were in the days of the early Church." --Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Exposition of Ephesians

"What are we doing to reach the lost? It should concern us if we have dry eyes when we pray." - Ray Comfort (WOTM p. 186)

When preaching and private talk are not available, you need to have a tract ready. . . Get good striking tracts, or none at all. But a touching gospel tract may be the seed of eternal life. Therefore, do not go out without your tracts. - C.H. Spurgeon (WOTM p 192)

"The gospel is only good news if it gets there in time" - Carl F. H. Henry

"Pray often, for prayer is a shield to the soul, a sacrifice to God, and a scourge for Satan." - John Bunyan

"The Bible tells us to love our neighbours, and also to love our enemies; probably because they are generally the same people." - G. K. Chesterton

Not called!' did you say? 'Not heard the call,' I think you should say. Put your ear down to the Bible, and hear Him bid you go and pull sinners out of the fire of sin. Put your ear down to the burdened, agonized heart of humanity, and listen to its pitiful wail for help. Go stand by the gates of hell, and hear the darned entreat you to go to their father's house and bid their brothers and sisters and servants and masters not to come there. Then look Christ in the face -- whose mercy you have professed to obey -- and tell Him whether you will join heart and soul and body and circumstances in the march to publish His mercy to the world. --William Booth

Someone asked Will the heathen who have never heard the Gospel be saved? It is more a question with me whether we -- who have the Gospel and fail to give it to those who have not -- can be saved. -- Charles Spurgeon

I have but one passion: It is He, it is He alone. The world is the field and the field is the world; and henceforth that country shall be my home where I can be most used in winning souls for Christ. -- Count Nicolaus Ludwn Zinzendorf

Some wish to live within the sound of a chapel bell; I wish to run a rescue mission within a yard of hell. -- C.T. Studd

We talk of the Second Coming; half the world has never heard of the first. -- Oswald J. Smith

No one has the right to hear the gospel twice, while there remains someone who has not heard it once. -- Oswald J. Smith

I have but one candle of life to burn, and I would rather burn it out in a land filled with darkness than in a land flooded with light-- John Keith Falconer

Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin, and desire nothing but God, and I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen; such alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the kingdom of heaven on earth. --John Wesley

He is not seeking a powerful people to represent HIM. Rather, He looks for all those who are weak, foolish, despised, and written off: and He inhabits them with His own strength. -- Graham Cooke

While women weep, as they do now, I'll fight; while children go hungry, as they do now I'll fight; while men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I'll fight; while there is a drunkard left, while there is a poor lost girl upon the streets, while there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I'll fight-I'll fight to the very end! --William Booth

"Brethren, there is no hope for China, no hope for the world, no hope for our own city, while the Church is sluggish and lethargic."
Spurgeon

Ravenhill,

"There are two kinds of people, those dead in sin and those dead to sin."

"Either we concentrate in prayer, or we pray in concentration camps.

"A mouse was caught by its tail in a trap the other day, and the poor creature went on eating the cheese. Many men are doing the same. They know that they are guilty, and they dread their punishment, but they go on nibbling at their beloved sins."
- C.H. Spurgeon

1. Before grace can revive a sinner from death, the law must first put him there.

2. If you LOVE YOUR SIN, you HATE HIS LAW. If you LOVE HIS LAW, you will HATE YOUR SIN!

One day a lady criticized D. L. Moody for his methods of evangelism in attempting to win people to the Lord.

Moodys reply was, I agree with you. I don't like the way I do it either.

Tell me, how do you do it The lady replied, I don't do it.

Moody retorted, Then I like my way of doing it better than your way of not doing it.

God did not save you so you could become Satan's punching bag." Dave Spear

Great quote from Roy Hargrave:
"Reach out to lost people. Give them the truth. Be bold about it. Don't be sheepish or apologetic about it. What we do is the measure of what we really believe. The rest is just religious talk. Faith without works is dead."

R.A. Torrey
Exodus 34:6-7; Genesis 6: 5-7; Psalm 5: 4-6

God does not punish the sinner merely for the sinner' good. God is holy. God hates sin. His holiness and hatred of sin, like everyone of His attributes, is living and active and must manifest itself. His holy wrath at sin must strike. See Isaiah 53:6 "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the LORD have laid upon Him the iniquity of us all." The literal translation of the Hebrew for "has laid on" is "caused to strike upon."

Any view of punishment of sin that leaves out the thought of its being an expression of God's holy hatred is not only unbiblical, but also shallow and dishonoring to God.

God is holy, infinitely holy, and He infinitely hates sin. We get glimpses at times of what God's hatred of sin must be in our own burning indignation at some enormous iniquity, but God is infinitely holy; God's wrath at the smallest sin is infinitely greater than ours at the greatest enormity. God is love, it is true, but this love is not of the sentimental sort that sends costly bouquets and tender missives to moral monsters, as some of our Universalist theologians would have us think... "Our God is a consuming fire" Heb 12:29. God's love for sinners will never be appreciated until it is seen in the light of His blazing wrath at sin.

Isaiah 6: 5-6; Job 42:5-6

The pure light of God's holiness reveals the blackness of our sin.

If any man thinks well of himself, he has never met God. Nothing will demolish self-righteousness like one real sight of God. When dealing with self-righteous people, get them into the holy presence of God if you can.

Rom 5:8

The wonderfulness of God's love! It would be no wonder if an unholy God could love unholy men; but that the God whose name is Holy, the infinitely Holy God, could love beings so utterly sinful as we are, is the wonder of the eternities. There are many deep mysteries in the Bible, but no other as profound as this.

In response to people asking about watching TV with "just a little bit" of swearing or nudity in it:
Just how much sin does it take before the Holy Spirit is grieved? The biting of a fruit will just about do it. - Paul Washer

"We have false churches for false converts." Jeff Noblit

Christian's don't tell lies, they sing them in church. A W Tozer

"If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him."
C.T. Studd

"There must appear a new type of preacher. The proper, ruler-of-the-synagogue type will never do. Neither will the priestly type of man who carries out his duties, takes his pay and asks no questions, nor the smooth-talking pastoral type who knows how to make the Christian religion acceptable to everyone. All these have been tried and found wanting. Another kind of religious leader must arise among us. He must be of the old prophet type, a man who has seen visions of God and has heard a voice from the Throne. When he comes (and I pray God there will be not one but many) he will stand in flat contradiction to everything our smirking, smooth civilization holds dear. He will contradict, denounce and protest in the name of God and will earn the hatred and opposition of a large segment of Christendom." A.W. Tozer

The prince of preachers, Charles Haddon Spurgeon said, The greatest enemy to human souls is the self-righteous spirit which makes men look to themselves for salvation.
